Suffering from hair loss? Don’t worry because castor oil, also know as the hair growth oil, have been used therapeutically for many health conditions including as a hair growth treatment and remedy.

Castor oil hair growth treatment is a natural method that helps your hair to grow healthier and thicker. That’s why, if you notice that your hair is becoming thinner every time you check yourself in the mirror, it’s probably time for you to find out more about the various castor oil uses and pick one.

Hair growth treatment by means of castor oil has long been recognized in the alternative health field. It is considered a type of natural hair oil for baldness, which is actually a result of many factors such as your genetics, diet, stress level, environment and lifestyle. A popular example of castor oil that prevents hair fall and thinning is the Jamaican Black Castor Oil.

What Are the Benefits of Castor Oil for Hair Growth?

Regular castor oil use on your hair’s roots and scalp will help:

  1. Increase hair growth
  2. Thicken hair that is starting to thin out
  3. Reduce and prevent hair damage
  4. Eliminate dry hair
  5. Make the hair fuller and shinier
  6. Deeply condition and moisturize hair and scalp
  7. Prevents dry scalp
  8. Boost your hair’s overall health

Applying castor oil to your hair tips will also prevent your hair from looking frizzy and having split ends and damage. You will also notice that your hair is stronger and won’t develop split ends that easily anymore.

How Do You Use Castor Oil to Prevent Hair Loss?

Here are the common step-by-step techniques for using castor oil in hair loss:

  1. Using your fingertips, apply high quality castor oil to your roots and scalp.
  2. Make sure that you distribute the oil evenly on the scalp.
  3. Do your best to avoid the oil fro getting into your hair as its thick consistency may be hard to wash out.
  4. After applying it to your scalp, cover your hair with a plastic cap and wrap it in a towel.
  5. Let the oil stay in your hair for at least 15 to 20 minutes or allow it to set overnight.
  6. Wash it out with shampoo after to remove the castor oil.
  7. Do this once a week for 6-8 weeks to see the results.

Depending on your preference, you can also mix the oil with other oils (i.e. grape seed) to eliminate the super-thick consistency and unpleasant scent of castor oil.

Total Hair Care Is Key

Using castor oil on your hair is just one of the strategies to encourage hair growth. Having a healthy diet, taking essential hair supplements (which contain essential hair vitamins), getting enough sleep and regular exercise will help you grow your hair back longer, thicker and stronger.

I do understand that it is appropriate to use castor oil once a week but if used everyday, would it have some sort of reaction that may effect the hair growth and which shampoo to be used for rinsing hair?

i know that castor oil does work to grow hair! it’s wonderful! one word of caution – do not use this in areas that are prone to grow hair if you do not wish to have hair in that area ie: face, etc. castor oil is so good at helping hair to grow, that if you put some on areas that are prone to growing hair and that is an area that you don’t wish to have hair growth, you will wish that you had not used castor oil on that area.

I have a doubt…. Should castor oil be used only in the area where i have lost my head hair or can it be applied on my entire scalp?
And also is it common to lose some strands of hair on applying castor oil for the first few days?

I had discoloration on toe nails and my finger nails were dry and brittle…with white spots. I rubbed Castor Oil on both nail sets each night, and in 4 days there was a dramatic difference. Forget the nail polish.

My intention for using the castor oil was to grow my hair faster and it has worked like a charm. I died my hair conveniently at the same day I started using the castor oil so that I would have a good nourishment for it after dying and also so I would have a perfect view on my hair growth over time. It has been one month, I can tell my hair is very well nourished and conditioned, and it has grown about half an inch. That is soo fast. I love this product, it has worked so well for me and I will continue using it and recommending it to others. :D

  17. coolfriend says:

Can anyone suggest which castor oil should be used? which brand and where it will be available?
    Thanks.

I’ve been using Castrol Oil for about three 1/2 weeks and my natural hair is shiner and stays moisturized longer. I’m also using the oil to stimulate growth as a result of damage from wearing a weave. I’m African American and I wear my hair in its natural beauty (i.e.,no weaves, relaxer and no heat). It’s a humectant, it’s retains moisture in our hair. I see results already. Wonderful find!

  19. Mayte says:

I started using CO about 5 days ago because I have some breakage around my edges. So far, I can see and feel a thickness that was not there before, but I cannot say it has magically grown just yet. I will give it some time.

  20. Naila says:

    Hello everyone,
I started using castor oil on my hair as well few weeks ago and i must admit i see some small difference. My hair looks fuller and shinier everytime i wash it off.
May i be bold and suggest that we could maybe use it on our eyelashes as well? would it have positive effect or should we avoid it? Waiting for your opinions.

  21. Gk says:

Castor Oil is used by Indians especially rural people as nourishment to hair apart from many other health usages.
We have seen even people above 90 with thick and healthy hair.
Oil when massaged to palms and feet at night will cool the body and make the hand and feet soft too.

  22. javeria says:

    Hi all,

I started using castor oil after reading these comments exaxtly one month ago. Now my hair has shine in it, the hair looks healthier, with bounce and volume. It has also started growing. I’m so happy, just waiting for my hair to grow more so I can get a good hair cut :-)

Hi to all, particularly to Amanda, can you please tell which which company’s castor oil your using for your hair? I need one badly.

  24. Sara says:

I’ve been using Jamaican black castor oil for about 3,5 months now. Back in June, I did some research into how to strenghten my hair and most of all, how to promote new hair growth, naturally if possible. For about a year before that, I’ve been experiencing what I can only describe as dramatic hairloss (probably stress-related), which mainly occured in the front of my head as well as on the sides and was so visible (especially when I had my hair up) that several of my family members commented on it (very helpful, thanks!). I should note that I’m a 23 year-old female with no previous history of hairloss, nor has any of my female relatives experienced this. Needless to say that I was embarassed and desperate and tried to ‘cover up’, to no avail.

Based on my fairly lengthy and thorough research, I’ve decided to try black castor oil. I was hopeful but also pretty sceptical, I found it hard to believe that it could be effective in such a short period of time as I’ve read about online. Indeed, I doubted that it will help me at all. Sadly, I didn’t take any pictures to track my progress, which I really regret now.

I’ve decided to simultaneously use castor oil on my eyebrows and eyelashes as well as my hair (didn’t experience any bad eye reaction), as I wanted to thicken them and I also thought that it may be easier to see a difference quicker than in my hair. I should also say that at the same time, I started to take a B12 (biotin) supplement, which however I discontinued for nearly all of July, August and September.

My results to date are really amazing. The bald(ing) patches that were visible from certain angles in the crown of my head are now 90% gone and improving still. In one of the previous comments it was recommended that you take great care WHERE you put the oil, as new hair growth will occur even in places where it’s never been before. I agree completely – my original harline shape was a ‘heart’ (or Mickey Mouse, if you like). That has changed completely now, as there’s been new hair growth in the ‘corners’. I’ve had that hairline all my life and I am 100% certain that I’ve never had hair there before. I call the new hair ‘baby hair’ because it’s approximately 2,5 cm long now and still growing. It’s really easy to keep track of my improvements, since I can actually see the new hair now. The thickness of my hair has improved as well. I think it’s due to two things – my hair isn’t dry at all anymore and therefore doesn’t break and fall out before its time and also because the new baby hair is adding to the volume.

My routine is as follows: I applied the oil about twice a week, usually in the evening (had it on all day in the weekend if I knew I was going to stay in) and I covered my hair with plastic bag to warm it up (very charming). Not sure whether this is a factor but that’s what I did, anyway. It’s important to remember that black castor oil is really thick and therefore you should take your time and make sure it reaches your scalp – I gently massaged it in, doesn’t take long. Aslo, a little goes a long way! I took the bag off before bed and kept the oil in all night. Not pleasant, exactly, but well worth it. In the morning, I very thoroughly washed my hair until I was sure that all the oil is gone.

There is one thing I experience every time I put the oil on and when I wash it out – some hair falls out and it may look like it’s quite a lot. Do not panic if this occurs (like I did the first time around). This hair would have fallen out naturally at some point, anyway, and it WILL be replaced by new growth.
I’ve read several places that castor oil smells bad to some people – to me, it’s got a rather pleasant earthy/nutty smell, so I had no problem with that. I also noticed that some users complained that it leaves their hair greasy…I don’t know but maybe it’s because they put oil in their hair and then fail to rinse it out properly?? Just a thought.

As a bonus, I noticed my eyebrows grew in places where I plucked too much in the past, and my eyelashes thickened and ARE a bit longer. I think that the principle here (as well as with my hair) is that castor oil moisturizes and prevents the hair to break or fall out before it naturally has to.

To sum up: I’m so happy that I found castor oil (will definitely stick to jamaican black castor oil, it gets the best reviews when it comes to results) and I will continue to use it as part of my routine…forever!

I have been using castor oil for 6 weeks. It has thicken my hair. It gives it a lustruous shine. My hair has grown about 1 1/2 inches. It slows down shedding. I am using regular castor oil.

  26. Shae' says:

Okay you guys, so I picked up some castor oil today and when I got home it read “Stimulant Laxative” underneath. Does that matter or do I need the hair store’s version??

    • SoJu says:

It does not matter. That’s actually another use for castor oil. I use the same thing by Humco. Looked high and low for it until I hit the fiber section. I learned from a Hispanic woman her skincare routine was to mix some castor oil with Nivea lotion (from Germany) and apply to face. She has the most beautiful dewy skin. It has a great moisturizing effect. I still have yet to get my hands on this lotion to try. But I definitely will.
